Interactive Video Conferencing

Hi, My name is Kylie I have been asked to create a blog as part of my Masters in Educational Technology.

As there are many Web 2.0 Tools and Web 3.0 as we get more and more interactive I would like to encourage some chatter about ICV Interactive Video Conferencing (in particular K-6).

In the past my experiences have been concentrated in the VET sector although as I move towards completing my Masters in Ed Tech (USQ) I would also like to make a move across to the world of Instructional Design with a strong emphasis on Educational Technologies.

One that I feel should be in all schools is the opportunity to interact via video conferencing.

Please feel free to let me know of any schools that you are aware of that utilise this technology, favourite content areas, favourite content providers or simply provide your thoughts on the use of IVC in K-6.

It is this area that I may focus on in my Master Project so my intention is to use the thoughts and feedback of educators to base my Research Question - Ofcourse your suggestions are welcome. I look forward to your posts.

:) Kylie

    Great start to your blog.
    I'd be interested in your tips for effective video conferencing.

  2. Hello Kylie,
    I have attended sessions where there has been interactive video conferencing and was amazed at how people from all over Australia were (virtually) in the same room. I am in a University setting, so can't claim to know any schools that utilize this.
    I have used Wimba to teach - which is not exactly the same thing, but still does bring students and teachers together. One of the recommended sites in this course (may have been Kathy Cassidy's class blog) had the children (6 year olds)in two different locations using Wimba or similar software to read through a poem together. Did you come across that?

  3. Thanks Petrea & Joan

    AS of yet I have not come across the Kathy Cassidy Blog, However I will now.

    My intentions are to show the stages of my journey as I delve deeper into the who what and how and in some cases why not IVC is alive.

    This week I have made a mental and now a blogged map of the areas that I feel will place IVC in a nutshell.

    What is IVC? A good place to start!
    The content providers that are available.
    The topics available.
    Equipment and Resources required.
    Who is doing it?
    Who is not & why not?

    I welcome your comments as I make way through. Ideally I will build a useful resource for those wishing to embark into the world of IVC. With link to content providers and reflections of those who are already making use of IVC.

  4. I have had a look at Kathy Cassidy's Blog at
    http://primarypreoccupation.wordpress.com/
    a great resource on many Web 2.0 Tools being used in Primary, it really is endless what Wikis can be used for.

    Well worth a look. Kylie

  5. What is videoconferencing?
    Videoconferencing is a live, two-way, interactive electronic means of communication. Two or more people in different geographic locations can engage in face-to-face audio and visual exchanges using cameras, monitors, and document software.

    I had a read of a great comprehensive guide for teacher. Worth scanning your eyes over. http://www.netc.org/digitalbridges/teachersguide/preface.html
    This site does take an angle as though your were developing the conference yourself, so it is thorough and looks like a lot of work.

    However, in my next post I hope lighten the load and bring some information regarding topics that are being covered and content providers.

  7. I have begun to get the feeling that Australia has a very long way to go in getting IVC into our schools.

    As I wade throgh the resources and get very excited about the way that IVC could be complimenting the topics in school - i just end up frustrated as I find that It really needs a HUGE push.

    I have offered to assist in to assist the NSW Dept of ED to get IVC up and running in a bigger way. I wonderif it is a case of theright and not knowing what the left hand is doing?? We shall soon find out.

    I do not think the integration of Web 2.0, Technology as a whole or IVC should be left up to the teachers (as they are slightly busy)however something needs to be put inplace more than what is currently happening - throwing the hardware at the system...

    My vent for the day :) Kylie

  8. Hi Kylie, I teach at Hawkesdale P12 College in Victoria. I have experimented a lot with videoconferencing as I find my students get so much out of it. We have videoconferenced using skype with many other schools across the globe, including Russia, USA, Canada, Thailand, Phillipines etc.
    My post on our use at http://murcha.wordpress.com/2008/12/06/using-skype-in-education/ and another great project Around the World in 80 schools http://murcha.wordpress.com/2009/02/16/around-the-world-in-80-schools/ My next step is to try and get authors, storytellers or some other sites that offer guest speaker to come in virtually to our classroom, using skype. We have also used DiscoverE to learn from Jean Pennycook in the Antarctic about the Adele penguins and my year 7s learn from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra through Elluminate with a video camera showing the musician and his instrument.rld-in-80-schools/

  9. I have hours of interactive videoconferencing experience, but not yet in classroom environments. I was employed by the Health Dept of WA a few years ago 2000-05 I think, not sure, and we used IVC for meetings and Professional Development. There was even an entire 60 hour course delivered entirely by VC that I participated in. A link to the article written about the program is here:
    http://jtt.rsmjournals.com/cgi/content/abstract/7/5/300

    I have also completed hours of my GradDipEd training by VC with links to Esperance and Geraldton. Dr Mort Harslett is in Geraldton co-ordinating at lot of this at the "Combined Universities Centre".

    Interesting research in chapter 7 here:

    with some student opinion.

    As a motivated adult learner I love the medium, not sure how it would go with disinterested middle schoolers. I think point to point with a teacher/facilitator at each end might blow students minds, but for others AV duplexing may be a bit of a yawn. My mobile telephone does VC better than the early polycom system I used 8 years ago!

  10. Sorry about the post above - more info. I am working in Kalgoorlie, have been living here for 17 years. PD in Perth is impractical with a one day drive or an airfare that is more expensive that Brisbane-Sydney or Sydney-Melbourne.

    IVC has been an absolute god-send here as I have linked with sites all over Western Australia (Broome, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Albany, Perth).

    The school I am in is K-10, private sector.

  11. Hi Phillip
    Thanks for your post,The scope of VC is just huge, as you said it is being used for PD and in the corporate world - education could be using it in so many ways. What have beenyour favourite sites? What do you think the kids tend to like most?

    VC in my opinion can bridge the gap for all rural settings - although I see no reason that all schools should not be usinig IVC to enhance current pedagogies, across all areas.

  13. Hi Kylie
    I am only just starting to use video in my classroom, so am very interested in it and the benefits it can have.
    Thanks for your post on my site - I'm guessing that you find it difficult to find time getting everything completed like me:)
    All the best

  14. Selected Video Conference Field Trips by Content Area Compiled by Berrien County ISD, www.remc11.k12.mi.us/dl

    A very impressive list by Janine Lim - thi sgets you thinking that if this list was last updated in 2001 - why are we so behind in IVC technologies in our schools?

    If you can provide an insite as to why your school isn't making the most of IVCing. It will assist me in my quest to provide opportunies that have up til now not been experienced in so many schools.

    As I'm not a primary ed teacher I can only speculate at this point intime that we have the following obstacles:
    * Funding/Budgets$$$???
    * Physical space?
    * Tech support for teachers?
    * Planning Time?
    * Resources?
    I will continue to look into this, I will also be posting this on the oz teachers forum, I am looking forward to the qualified opinions of those in the classrooms.

  15. Just a little not - Some details on IVC and Home schooling.

    You have me thinking - Home schooling - IVC ? Why not!

    Here is some interesting reading in regards to the use of IVCing and home schooling.
    The Future of Home schooling by Fritz Hinrichs

    Through the use of software packages such as Netmeeting (micorsoft.com/netmeeting) and CU-Seeme (cu-seeme.com) video-conferencing can now be run over the Internet for just a minimal cost. Homeschooling can now enjoy the best of both worlds- economy of scale (the schoolhouse) and home-based professional instruction (the private tutor).

    Source
    http://www.home-school.com/Articles/phs19-fritzhinrichs.html

    This is a us based org - you should investigate a little further - from what I can gather its a private org that runs a virtual school network for home based schooling.

    These tools -- both the computerized curriculum and the video-conferencing system -- can be secured from IEI for as little as $8 a month per student, along with other educational support.

  16. Hi Kylie
    I think there is video conferencing in schools but it's probably called other things, and may not always use the 'video' component. Most state jurisdictions support web conferencing software which can have video included - VIC uses Elluminate, SA Centra etc. Wimba Live Classroom is also widely used. Skype (as someone's mentioned above) can also be used for video conferencing. Some of this is done systemically and some done by individual schools and/or individual teachers. But it's always going to be subject to appropriateness for the subject matter, learning outcomes sought etc. A whole range of collaborative and communication tools can be used: this is just one. You may be interested in our recently published report on Collaboration in Teaching and Learning (www.educationau.edu.au/SICTAS-ctl

  17. As there are a few options to IVC here is one that your school may just be able to get up and running - if you are already doing so, feel free to let us know what you have been up to.

    If you have used one of the free tools available how does the experience compare to a fully decked out IVC facility ? Are the free tools accepted and used by the content providers or ?? Tell us your experience.

  20. After discussion IVC's with Mitchell from Mac ICT I was directed to the following site, finally evidence that the NSW Ed Dept has a central point for getting these conferences going withi our schools. I am on the scout to see just how active they are, I hope to find out from those that have participated in them what the resonse is, how dod the chidren react? What did they feel they got out of the experiences and what other programs would they like to be involved in.
